The Ressurection

The Resurrection or Anastasis

The Icon of the Resurrection or Anastasis is also known under the name of "The Harrowing of Hades." According to the Greek Orthodox Church, this is after Christ has been crucified but has not risen yet, however he is not passive in the 3 days of being in the tomb, but rather Christ enters into Hades to free the souls who had been trapped there. In this icon we see Christ pulling Adam up out of the tomb and Eve has already been freed by Christ. John the Baptist stands behind Adam to continue to proclaim "prepare the way of the Lord" In the center is obviously Christ, dressed in white with his robe breaking the gates of Hades and breaking the bondage of sin and death.
